Since 1970, Congress has asked the United States Forest Service to provide the
Christmas Tree for the lawn of the Nation's Capitol. On the Thursday following
Thanksgiving, "the tree" is decorated with thousands of hand made ornaments and lit
with thousands of lights ~ its lighting signifies the beginning of the Christmas season
in Washington DC. Throughout the following weeks, the tree is appreciated by people
across our nation via news print, television and in person, for the special time and the
special place that it symbolizes.
